NFL – Washington Redskins: Another Defeat

The Washington Redskins were defeated again on Sunday, and it became the most painful loss because it meant they were out of the playoffs. They have lost five of the last six games they have played, which was a completely none expected situation. Coach Zorn and his team felt very humiliated with this last game in where the final score was 20-13 to one of the lowest teams in the standings, Cincinnati.

During the game, the fullback Mike Sellers attempted a run over the offensive line, but the ball was lost and recovered by the Bengals two consecutive times. The possession was rough for Sellers, who saw twice how a touchdown ran away from his hands. This was a play that they have previously talked about and decided to do, but it just didn’t turn out what they expected.

The team was in a tough position when the first quarter ended and the score was 14-0. That was really bad for them especially that early on the game. The team could not be excused on injuries either, because Clinton Portis tried to make everything he could and the offensive side was trying to help to open up some space for him to run, but the assistance was very little. Also, quarterback Jason Campbell left the game for a little moment since he was not feeling part of his elbow, but it was not significant. The team at the end tried to make an effort and comeback but they were just sloppy on the decision making and on defense in some occasions.

At the end of the game, the Redskins coach Jim Zorn asked himself what went wrong with his team; he though they had all the weapons and the team had very good players, his tactics and game systems were very solid but when they tried to put it on practice it didn’t work as he expected. Bottom line, he didn’t know if the practices where enough but he put all of his effort in the process, but his players were not fluid on what he was putting on the field and his ideas were maybe not the best in certain moments.

"I need to check my plan of attack," Coach Zorn said. "And all of our staff, we need to re-evaluate what we're doing to see if we're going in the right direction. I really believe we're building a good foundation, but certainly when these things get strung across the board I certainly have to take and do take the responsibility for some of these games that just are not turning out like we have planned."

Zorn was really overwhelmed with the whole situation of the team, and even said that he felt like “the worst coach in America” However, even with this final results, Jim Zorn has had a lot of support from the Redskins owner Dan Snyder and from the front office chief Vinny Cerrato. Zorn explained that he was very thankful for the support that he has been receiving from both of them since he knows that they both very concerned about the team and they want the best for it; but after the game, neither of them wanted to talk about the loss.

Currently, Coach Jim Zorn has a lot of things to think about and will try to see the slips and mistakes that he did since this is his first season with the team. Nobody assured that the Redskins were going to be in the playoffs but they didn’t expect to see the team in the last position of the NFC East, least of all after blowing out a great opportunity to shine this season when they started with a record of 6-2.
