A Social Network Solution for College Admissions?
Author: Jason Luke
What college will be a good match for me? This question can cause a lot of stress in a student's life. Choosing a college must be thought out well and a college search is not the easiest thing to do. What makes a college a good match? Many factors can be mixed and matched in considering which school would be the best fit for each individual student. For example, the schools credentials may be very important for a student. Every student ought to evaluate his or her own personal education and needs to make sure the correct choice is made.
With this being said, it is important that every student takes a close look at each school they are wanting to attend. If a student is planning on furthering their education by going to a graduate school or a medical school, the student should find information on the undergraduate programs at the college they are wanting to attend. If the student is planning on attending medical school, he/she should find out if the chemistry department and biology department at the college of their choice is prestigious enough for him/her to get accepted into medical school. Even so, whether or not the student is planning on attending graduate school, he/she should find out information on the undergraduate program that he/she will be attending.
What students seem to forget is that they aren't the only ones trying to impress someone. Colleges too are constantly trying to impress their prospective students. Therefore, if students are serious about getting the best education, they should do their own research on each college they are considering. Many students forget that the process goes both ways are happy to be accepted anywhere.
Even though I have done very well academically, I don't consider my academic performance to be a complete measure of my current or future success. Colleges realize that academics aren't the only way to find the most motivated students who will have success in the real world. Therefore, they are always looking for better ways to learn about future prospects and the kind of character that will be added to their campus through the students they recruit.
When I was going through the college admissions process, the big thing in applicant evaluation was interviews and weekend retreats. I spent an entire weekend with a bunch of other prospective students participating in a variety of activities, including an interview. During this weekend retreat, college admissions officials watched us very closely to see how we interacted with the other prospective students in different situations. The interview portion of the weekend was to see what our attitudes and views about college and education were. They took their observations, our interview answers, and our grades and test scores, and based upon all this data, they made their decision as to who would be admitted to their school, who would be forced to look elsewhere and who would receive the best college scholarships.
Will the college admission process continue to be mostly based on test scores, or is the hope for a brighter future when the process will look beyond a few numbers? I firmly believe that in the near future many colleges will be looking for more information about each individual student. Now I'm not just talking about their essays, but much more than that. After all, we are living in the era of information, and more information about students is exactly what colleges need.
The internet has helped to lessen the headache of college admissions for both students and colleges. The internet allows for quick and easy application for students. However, students need to be careful to take the time needed to fill out the applications and essays carefully. Some students make the process easier than it is and hurry through it. Likewise, other students make the process much more difficult than it really is. Technology can be very beneficial, but if the student isn't careful it can also be detrimental as well. It is also widening the horizons for college admissions offices in their search for fresh new ways to look at applicants.
